Captain’s Log 2026.03.21- I’m at the Greensboro Coliseum complex (Klingon Battle Chamber) for a kid’s sporting event & there’s a sign for ‘Rabbit Breeders’ on the door.
Ok, my curiosity is piqued. After one of the kid’s volleyball I go over. There’s cages and cages of rabbit varieties, California, Graphite, etc.
I sought out the legendary New Zealand breed (the White one in pic) because one of my Attorney friends had to take care of a rabbit farm for a weekend as a teenager. During that weekend, a buck New Zealand rabbit sprayed him with urine from 10 feet away. Pause and think how you would feel if that happened to you. Great story so I had to see one of these legendary bucks in person.
The breeder confirmed that they are spicy and will definitely spray urine when they get angry.
Then I saw the French Angorran. Also photographed. The sheer amount of fur was amazing. Apparently you can use the wool – if wool is the nature of this hair – straight from the animal to ready for production.
The breeders were very friendly and informative. I’d go back next year.
One of my business ideas has been a rabbit hutch farm. A far cheaper way pound per pound to get meat then other domestic animals, especially cattle. So in talking with one of the owners, she mentioned that she can only sell her meat or the rabbit for two dollars per pound to the culler. Sounds like the culler as middleman Actually makes the bulk of the money. However, I’m sure has to butcher store package and deliver. My thought: is that these breeders and farmers should form a middleman co-op. If only I had more time to devote to something like this.
