In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the merger of Salem and Winston, the society will feature a presentation by:
Dr. Larry E. Tise
Topic: Detecting the Curious Wachovia Factor and Effect.
Dr. Tise will discuss the origins of the Wachovia Tract settled by the Moravians and its lasting effects.
Date: October 22, 2013
Location: Old Salem Visitor’s Center

Dr. Tise is the Wilbur and Orville Wright Distinguished Professor of History at East Carolina University. He is a former Director of the State of North Carolina Division of Archives and History and has written extensively, including several volumes in the series on local history in the area of Wachovia produced for the national bi-centennial in 1976.

A recent arts-oriented group, sponsored by Jim Goodman (owner of WRAL in Raleigh) and his business CBC unveiled its $80 million dollar proposal for downtown, between Spruce and Poplar Street.
The area would include multiple theaters, performance space, Black Theater Festival Hall of Fame Museum, and the new downtown Library.*
*The Forsyth County Commissioners voted to put the library in the old Sheriff’s building on 3rd and Town Hall Lane.

For over a decade property owners in the path of the Northern Beltway have had a black mark on their real estate title.
The NC DOT designated their properties in the beltway corridor.
As a result they can’t sell their properties. This has also occurred in Raleigh/Triangle area too.
Only one firm stood up and fought for these property owners: Hendrick Bryant (336) 723-7200.
For the past couple of years Matthew Bryant and his firm have fought that this designation on the DOT is a ‘taking’ per the condemnation statute. In addition, they have litigated that this should be a class action matter. The class action certification was fought all the way to the N.C. If you are a property owner in the Northern Beltway or affected in the Triangle/Raleigh area, call Hendrick Bryant. They were proactive in challenging the DOT that enough is enough. They told the DOT that if you are going to take a person’s property, you better pay for it.
