Jayant Baliga developed the equation for a wide bandgap semi-conductor at General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), and it was the second big discovery he made there, after first developing a new kind of transistor. After developing that formula, his next stop was a professorship at N.C. State.

“At N.C. State, we had the world’s leading program on widegap band materials and I wanted to work with a faculty developing these materials, so I set up a power semiconductor research center,” he explains.

That’s where that nifty new formula came in, a formula he used to make the first wide bandgap semiconductors in the early 90s.

“Since then, there has been tremendous interest around the globe, more than a dozen companies,” he says.

The Wide bandgap semi-conductor uses 90% less energy than other semi-conductors and handles higher temperatures.

Go Wolfpack!

Our County Commissioners have decided the fate of the new Central Library. There plan: renovate the existing space. See photo above.

There was an excellent proposal by Glenn Fulk, a NY architect to use the existing Sheriff’s office.

His design would have created a state of the art – next generation library and park.

To see Mr. Fulk’s design, go to: https://www.facebook.com/newdowntownwinstonsalemlibrary?ws&nr

October 1, 2013—the dirt fill and packing of the foundation area has been completed. Our building, which is across the street, has stopped vibrating.

In the morning, there was no steel structure.

By lunch today, the steel structure was completed per photo 1 below.

By the end of the day, the structure had expanded.

NC, recommendation for insulation contractor in Winston-Salem & Greensboro, Triad Lawyer

In the early winter of 2011 we decided that the insulation in our attic was insufficient. This was pointed out by a contractor who said we basically had no insulation. After a bit of procrastination, we bit the bullet and had our attic blown. I compared our natural gas bills and summer electric bills from previous years and there was a dramatic difference in the amount we paid, even with variance in weather between the two years. For instance, in the summer before our attic was blown, I would notice our inside temperature would rise late into the night. Now it stays cooler throughout the day and night, the summer heat doesn’t seep into our house.

The installer we used was Carolina Home Performance (contact info below). They were knowledgeable and have been doing this for two generations in a  family owned business. We looked at several others. They explained that it would take a year or so to recoup the savings. I highly recommend. Also below is an example of the estimate they gave me.

Lawsuit filed against driver in fatal seawall car accident

NC wrongful death attorney, Triad Lawyer, Winston-Salem Dram shop lawsuits

GALVESTON, Texas: A wrongful-death lawsuit has been filed against a driver who has been charged in the deaths of two men. The lawsuit also names the bar accused of selling the driver alcohol. The lawsuit involving the bar is a dram shop lawsuit. While this is in Texas, most states, including North Carolina, impose a duty on the bars and restaurants not to serve visibly intoxicated persons. If they do, and the driver/bar patron injures a third party, then the bar is liable for the damages along with the bar/restaurant.
In the Texas lawsuit, Matthew Green Shelton, 27, was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter in the April 25 deaths of Steven Louis Hunt, 42, and Joseph Owens, 43, both of Galveston.
The pedestrians apparently were walking on the sidewalk with a dog, also killed, at 6:15 p.m. when they were hit by a Red Mitsubishi at 13th Street and Seawall Boulevard, police said. The car, which was headed west, then struck a parked car.

On behalf of Hunt’s relatives, the victims Dallas attorney filed suit Oct. 4 in Galveston’s 122nd District Court against Shelton (the driver) and The Beach Hut (the bar) which is located at 731 Seawall Blvd. The lawsuit accused the bar of selling Shelton drinks even though it was apparent he was intoxicated.

estate planning budget, sanders law firm, Triad Lawyer

Ever wonder why you just can’t seem to save more?

“Save More?” you exclaim “I don’t save, in fact each month I think I get poorer.”

I’ve noticed as a lawyer over the last 15 and some years of practicing that the population as a whole is getting poorer. I know I’m not the only one, it’s been reported in papers. But I’ve seen it practicing law when people can’t afford to litigate a case they should litigate. I saw it back when I did bankruptcy cases also.

I’ve looked at why my family doesn’t save more too.

A big reason, in my opinion, is all the incidental expenses we tack on to our budget.

For instance, twenty years ago we didn’t have:

1)      $150-250 cell phone bills each month.

2)      $150-200 bills for internet & cable/dish/directv. I looked at a flat screen Saturday. The price wasn’t so bad, then I realized I’d have to upgrade from basic cable. I walked away.

3)      Credit Cards: On top of the above, twenty years ago it wasn’t quite as prevalent for people to defer payments on a credit card. A credit card was a charge then pay the bill at the end of the month. Now people run balances at interest rates that make loan sharks salivate. You know if you pay the minimum, you’ll never pay off the credit card balance. Practice Point: keep really low credit limits ($1000 or $2000) & pay the sucker off every month, on time.

Every month, $300-500 goes to just maintaining the 3 expenses I described above. And what do you get at the end of the day? Another bill for next month

Meantime, my goal is to increase retirement funding and brokerage accounts. I’m taking a hard look at what I need.

My question for you: do you really need that smart phone? digital cable? LeBron James Shoes?

Next blog in series: Do you really need to get a new/newer automobile?
